ANTI•TLED, New work by Chilean artist, Raul Pizarro. Opening reception and party at Laughing Tree Lab, September 17, 2011, 7pm-3am

For this show, Pizarro has painted a number of what he calls, ‘anti-portraits,’ wherein he uses digital post-processing to warp and distort photographs of his subjects and then uses these manipulations as reference for his paintings.

To better understand the intention driving Raul’s process, here is portion of his working artist statement for this series:

“This world we know is merely the surface of a vast, multiple universe of form where our true self is revealed. It’s a place where we can’t divide or distinguish our emotions from our thoughts and actions. Everything that is ultimately is interconnected and inextricable. Thus, the struggles, ambivalence and contradiction we experience in everday life are, in fact, the real image—the inherent nature of the human being.

“In matter of fact, the whole universe exists already in a diverse and varied multiplicity of states. Even if we were in an “enlightened” stage of development, our most precious creative conscience would be expressed in a multitude of facets. Informed by this understanding, I try to convey this multifarious nature of reality through my work. And still, I create “as through a glass darkly,” for I can’t paint what I’m not yet…..”

An interview Chris Backe did with Raul last year: http://www.chrisinsouthkorea.com/2010/07/interview-raul-pizarro/

On August 13, 2011 we held the launch event for Laughing Tree Lab, a new creative venue and production space, located near Noksapyeong Station. Our aim is for Laughing Tree Lab to be a fertile vessel for creation, collaboration, reimagination and inspiration in Seoul. We fully intend Laughing Tree Lab to be a prime point of connection and cross-fertilization between Korean and Expat creatives, as well. The launch event will include a curated group exhibition, live music, video performance and DJs.

Walking Directions to Laughing Tree Lab:
Take exit 2 out of Noksapyeong Station, walk straight down the hill to the pedestrian underpass, cross through, head out the right side exit, and walk straight for a block and a half. The entryway is on the left between Buttercup Cafe and Taco Enchilato.

__________________________

Music:

8:00 Matthew Mongano
9:30 Spoken word performance
10:00 On Sparrow Hills
11:00 DJ Dongseon Chang
12:30 Ripley Torres
1:30 Laughing Tree Lab resident DJs Omniology & Misterfire

Group exhibition: “In Vitro”

Intended as a playful take on the laboratory metaphor, the theme of this launch exhibition, ‘In Vitro,’ suggests notions of inception, fertilization, birth, and intentional, creative combinations. At the same time, use of the the term In Vitro is a conscious reflection on the artificiality of the art and performance space. Its a reminder that what we experience therein are extracts from the organic complex of life, isolated in order to facilitate the experimental processes of observation, reflection and synthesis.
